What New Zealand Parents Say About LeapHope’s Child Counselling

Parents share how LeapHope’s culturally aware therapists helped their children manage school anxiety, academic pressure and difficulties between home and social life.

★★★★★

“Our son started complaining of stomach aches before school and eventually refused to attend. His therapist helped him talk about friendship difficulties and classroom anxiety while guiding us on how to respond at home. School mornings gradually became calmer and more manageable.”

Parent of a Year 7 Student School Anxiety and Avoidance
★★★★★

“Our daughter was studying late, panicking before assessments and treating every small mistake as a failure. Counselling helped her manage perfectionism, anxious thoughts and NCEA pressure. We also learned how to support achievement without adding to her stress.”

Parents of a 16-Year-Old NCEA Stress and Perfectionism
★★★★★

“Every conversation about friends, independence or family expectations had become an argument. Her therapist understood both our Indian values and our daughter’s experience of growing up in New Zealand. We now communicate more calmly and set boundaries without making her feel misunderstood.”

Therapy That Understands Culture and Modern Childhood

Children growing up in New Zealand may move between Indian family expectations at home and a more independent social environment at school. LeapHope therapists consider parenting values, family relationships, language, identity and the child’s experience of growing up between cultures.

Therapy also addresses the realities of modern childhood, including gaming, social media, group chats, cyberbullying, online comparison, screen dependence, academic pressure and rapidly changing friendships. These influences are considered alongside the child’s emotional and behavioural needs.

Children receive an age-appropriate space to speak openly, while parents receive practical guidance for communication, boundaries and digital routines. The goal is to protect family values without overlooking the world in which the child is actually growing up.

Online Child Counselling in New Zealand: Parent FAQs

Clear answers about private booking, referrals, professional registration, fees, funding, diagnoses, school documentation and online counselling boundaries.

No. LeapHope is an independent private online counselling platform. It is not part of Health New Zealand, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, Gumboot Friday or a school counselling service. These local and funded services operate separately.

No GP or school referral is required to book a private LeapHope session. Parents can choose a therapist and book directly. A referral may still be required when accessing specialist or publicly funded mental health services within New Zealand.

LeapHope sessions are privately paid and are not presented as automatically covered by Health New Zealand, ACC, Gumboot Friday or private insurance. Parents should check directly with their insurer before booking if reimbursement is important.

LeapHope’s listed RCI-registered professionals are registered in India. RCI registration is different from registration with the New Zealand Psychologists Board. Review each professional’s qualifications and stated country of registration on the therapist profiles and confirm their eligibility to support a child located in New Zealand before booking.

The New Zealand service focuses on counselling, behavioural support and parent guidance. It does not automatically include a formal ADHD, autism, developmental or educational assessment. Families needing an official diagnosis or documentation should use a suitably recognised assessment provider.

Acceptance cannot be guaranteed because schools may apply different professional and documentation requirements. Ask the school what it requires before booking. A counselling summary is not the same as a formal psychological, diagnostic or educational assessment.

Parents can book directly from the appointment times currently displayed for each therapist. Some sessions may be available within 24 hours, although availability depends on the selected professional and preferred time.

A 50-minute online session starts from approximately NZ$33. Sessions with senior child psychologists start from approximately NZ$50. The final amount may vary slightly if currency conversion is applied during payment.

Parent involvement depends on the child’s age and needs. Parents may receive general progress updates, practical strategies and information relevant to the child’s wellbeing, while children and teenagers receive age-appropriate privacy. Privacy may be limited when there is a serious safety concern.

LeapHope is not an emergency or crisis service. Call 111 when there is immediate danger. For immediate emotional support, call or text 1737 to speak with a trained counsellor at any time. Parents can also contact their GP, local crisis team or nearest emergency department.
